The metrics card had one volume threshold doing two jobs.
recMetricsLowVolume = 20 is a DISPLAY floor — below that a skip rate is
anecdote — but the card then presented deltas as though it were also a
DECISION floor. Those differ by an order of magnitude: detecting the ~13pp
differences that matter needs ~133 plays per arm for 80% power at a=0.05.
So Discover's taste-matched (59 plays) and random-unheard (70) both rendered
as full-confidence rows with a bold delta beside them, and that comparison
sits at p ~ 0.06. The card said "signal"; the arithmetic said "maybe". It
produced a recommendation the data didn't support, and any reader with the
same numbers would have made the same call.
Deltas now carry a 95% margin of error and a `distinguishable` flag, computed
server-side so both clients read the same arithmetic instead of each
re-deriving it. Skip rate is a two-proportion difference; completion is
Welch, which needs a variance — hence completion_sqsum in the query. It is
the sum of squares rather than stddev_samp on purpose: raw source rows are
merged into surface families in Go, and sums of squares combine across groups
exactly whereas standard deviations cannot.
recMetricsLowVolume is untouched. "Too thin to show" and "too thin to act on"
are different questions.
Web renders an indistinguishable delta as dimmed and prefixed "≈", with the
range on hover and a legend explaining the glyph. Colour is withheld unless
the delta clears its margin — colouring noise red is what made the old card
misleading. Breakdown rows go through the same path; those are the thinnest
samples on screen and where the old card misled most.
Also fixes the admin trends view, which had the same problem worse: its
"Latest skip"/"Latest completion" columns are one WEEK while the adjacent
Plays column is the whole window. I misread exactly that and briefly
concluded Deep cuts was the worst surface, from ~17 plays in a single week —
over 180 days it is one of the best. Headers now name their period and the
skip cell carries that week's play count.
#2524: resolveArtist now recognises a duplicate-MBID unique violation as the
expected condition it is, matching resolveAlbum. Two rows mapping to one
MusicBrainz artist is a merge candidate, not a fault; without the branch it
logged a generic warning plus a Postgres ERROR line on every scan, which
teaches an operator to ignore database errors.
Client half of #370. Lists every device signed in to your account, with a
per-row sign-out and a "sign out all other devices" action.
The card does one thing the API alone doesn't: it says "Address changed" when
created_ip and last_ip differ, rather than printing two addresses and leaving
you to compare them. That mismatch — same device string, different origin —
is the shape of a stolen token, and it's the reason IP capture was worth a
migration. Making the operator spot it by eye would have wasted the data.
Placed with Password and API Token rather than at the bottom of the page:
those three are the account-security group, and this is the one that tells
you the other two need attention.
Details worth naming:
- The current session gets a "This device" badge and NO sign-out button —
offering one would log you out of the page you're standing on. The server
already excludes it from logout-others; this makes that visible.
- Sign-out-all-others is a two-step confirm and states the count, so the
button can't be a surprise.
- A 404 on revoke reloads instead of erroring. It means the session is
already gone — revoked elsewhere, or expired — so the list was simply
stale and showing the truth is the right response. The code is
`session_not_found`, not `not_found`: apierror.NotFound(what) prefixes it.
- Empty and error states both handled (rule #24); the empty case is
practically unreachable since listing requires an authenticated request,
and is handled rather than assumed.
- User-agent parsing is deliberately coarse. A real UA parser is a
dependency and a maintenance burden for a string whose only job is "do you
recognise this?" — the addresses carry the actual signal.
Tests cover the parts that would be quiet if broken: the current-session
badge suppressing its own sign-out button, the address-changed warning
appearing and NOT appearing, the two-step confirm not firing on first click,
and the load-failure retry.
Android parity is a separate decision, not assumed.
The #1249 mechanism (stamp WHY a track is in the snapshot at build
time, freeze it onto the play at ingestion, break it down in metrics)
generalizes from a For You one-off to the standard for every system
mix (#1270):
- Migration 0039 widens both pick_kind CHECKs (drop + re-add in the
same change) to taste/fresh + Discover's dormant/cross_user/random
+ tier1-3 for the rule-#131 eligibility ladders.
- GetForYouPickKindForTrack becomes GetSystemPickKindForTrack
(user, variant, track); ingestion stamps any systemPlaylistSources
play from its own variant's live snapshot, live + offline paths.
- Discover stamps its candidate bucket on discoverTrack before the
interleave, making the 40/30/30 allocation measurable; dedup keeps
the taking bucket's stamp.
- Metrics replace the for_you special-case with one pick-kind
vocabulary — any family with attributed plays gets a breakdown,
future stamping mixes need no metrics change.
- Web: breakdown sub-rows are now toggled per surface (collapsed by
default) so eight stamping mixes don't swamp the card.

Milestone #127 step 2 (#1249). For You deliberately blends two
populations — a head of top-scored taste picks and a tail sampled from
deeper ranking (the freshness injection) — but the metrics judged it as
one blob, so its skip rate couldn't distinguish "the taste engine is
missing" from "the freshness tax is too high". That number decides the
exploration share before we tune it.
- Migration 0038: nullable pick_kind ('taste'|'fresh') on both
playlist_tracks (stamped at snapshot build) and play_events (frozen at
play-ingestion — the snapshot rebuilds daily, so attribution cannot be
reconstructed at read time).
- Builder: pickHeadAndTail marks head=taste / tail=fresh; the small-pool
fallback is all taste (top-N-by-score IS the taste mechanism). Other
variants persist NULL.
- Ingestion: for_you plays (live + offline replay) look the track up in
the user's current snapshot; not found → unattributed, never guessed.
- Metrics: For You's row gains a breakdown (taste / fresh / earlier
unattributed plays), parent row stays the sum; web card renders the
sub-rows indented with the same baseline deltas + low-data dimming.

The recommendation metrics table was observable but not actionable: raw
source strings (album:<uuid> one-offs) drowned the stable surfaces, and
manual plays were excluded so skip rates had no control group.
- SQL: include NULL-source rows (the baseline) and carry completion_n
so family merges can weight avg_completion correctly.
- Handler buckets raw sources into stable families (radio:<uuid> →
Radio, album:/artist: → direct plays, etc.) grouped by surface
intent: go-to / discovery / direct — each band judged against its
job, since discovery mixes are expected to skip hotter. Families
under 20 plays are flagged low-confidence, not hidden.
- Settings card renders the baseline row and per-surface deltas in
percentage points vs baseline (worse-than-baseline deltas in danger
color), intent hint copy per group, low-data rows dimmed.
- Pure-unit test for the bucketing/merge; DB test updated to the new
contract (baseline included, radio:<uuid> collapse).

Per-source play outcomes so the operator can see whether each recommendation
surface is landing and tune the now-operator-tunable taste weights.
Server:
- query RecommendationSourceMetricsForUser: groups the user's play_events by
source (system-playlist surface), reporting plays / skips / avg completion
over a window; NULL-source (library/radio) plays excluded.
- GET /api/me/recommendation-metrics?days=30 (default 30, capped 365) →
{window_days, sources:[{source, plays, skips, skip_rate, avg_completion}]}.
- handler test: 401 unauth; per-source aggregation + NULL-source exclusion +
skip_rate / avg_completion math.
Web:
- lib/api/metrics.ts: query + friendly source labels.
- settings page gains a "Recommendation metrics" card (table of surface / plays
/ skip rate / avg completion), with loading/error/empty states.
- settings tests mock the new query (manual subscribe-store, hoisting-safe).
Note: You-might-like plays aren't source-tagged (it's a Home row, not a system
playlist), so this covers For-You / Discover / the mixes. Tagging YML plays
would be a client follow-up.

Operator-tunable 0-12s crossfade in Settings → Playback. Default 0
(off). Most albums sound best at 0 — gapless masters, classical, and
live recordings all suffer noticeable crossfades.
Implementation: pure-function position-derived volume scalar.
`deriveFadeScalar(position, duration, crossfadeSec)` ramps from 0 to
1 over the leading X seconds, 1 to 0 over the trailing X seconds,
and stays at 1 in between. Tracks shorter than 2X don't fade.
The layout's audio-volume effect now multiplies player.volume by
the fade scalar — no timers, no AudioContext, no element swapping.
Re-renders at the ~4Hz `timeupdate` cadence give 16 discrete steps
over a 4s fade, audibly close to smooth. Smoothing to per-frame
ramps via rAF is a follow-up if needed.
Setting persists to localStorage as `minstrel.crossfade` (matches
the existing volume-storage convention).
Tests cover the pure derivation (off, too-short track, fade-in,
fade-out) + clamp/persist on setCrossfade + invalid-input recovery
on readStoredCrossfade.
Came up debugging the in-app update flow — wasn't obvious which image
the container was actually running without exec'ing in. New flow:
### Server
- internal/server/version.go: new `var ServerVersion = "dev"`,
overridden via -ldflags at build time.
- /healthz response gains a "version" key alongside the existing
"status" + "min_client_version". Backward-compat: existing clients
ignore unknown JSON fields. Endpoint stays unauthenticated.
### Build
- Dockerfile: new `ARG MINSTREL_VERSION=dev`, threaded into the
go build -ldflags so the binary's ServerVersion is stamped at
link time. Default "dev" preserves local `docker build` ergonomics.
- .forgejo/workflows/release.yml: tags step also emits a `version`
output (the git tag for tag pushes, "main" for branch pushes);
build step passes it as `--build-arg MINSTREL_VERSION=...`.
### Web
- web/src/lib/components/ServerVersion.svelte: small understated
text ("Server v2026.05.10.2") that fetches /healthz on mount.
Renders nothing on parse failure or pre-version images.
- Mounted at the bottom of Settings.

When /api/client/version returns 404 (no APK in /app/client/, e.g.
v2026.05.10.0 which had a failed CI APK-attach step), the previous
shape rendered the section heading + intro paragraph with an empty
hole where the button should be. Confusing — looks like a broken
button.
Moved the section wrapper, heading, and intro paragraph INSIDE
MobileAppDownload so the whole block collapses together when info
is null. Settings page just mounts <MobileAppDownload />; nothing
visible if no APK is available.

Closes the discoverability gap on the in-app update flow — the
/api/client/apk endpoint exists but had no web UI surface to find
it. User asked to be able to "visit the site on my phone and
download the apk from there."
- web/src/lib/components/MobileAppDownload.svelte — fetches
/api/client/version once on mount; renders a download link with
version + size when 200; renders nothing on 404 (no APK bundled,
graceful degradation in dev environments and pre-CI-wiring images).
- Mounted on the login page (below the Register link) so the link
is discoverable without authentication. The /api/client/* endpoints
are themselves unauthed, so the flow works end-to-end for any
visitor on a phone.
- Also mounted in Settings → Mobile app section for logged-in users
who want to grab the matching APK for sideloading on a different
device.
Browser handles the download via the server's existing
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="minstrel.apk" header.

Three Go lint hits + two web test failures, all from the U3 push.
- internal/mailer/mailer.go: SentEmail.HtmlBody → HTMLBody (Go's
initialism convention; revive flagged); FakeSender.Send unused
ctx parameter renamed to _.
- internal/audit/audit_test.go: removed dead validUUID helper. It
was added speculatively in U1-T1 and never called by any test.
pgtype import stays — other tests use it.
- web/src/routes/settings/settings.test.ts: existing ListenBrainz
tests queried `getByRole('button', { name: /save/i })` which
worked when the page had only one Save button. The new Profile
card adds a "Save profile" button that also matches the regex,
triggering "found multiple elements". Anchored to /^save$/i for
exact-match. The newer Save profile tests still use
/save profile/i which is unique.
This is the same shape of test-fixture-lag I owe an answer for: I
landed new content that broke an existing test, and the existing
test had a too-loose selector. The right fix is to tighten the old
selector now (this commit) and to flag this pattern — selectors
that regex-match by partial words — as a candidate for the DRY
pass / test-utils consolidation.
Five fixes in one commit, all from the U1+U2+U3 push:
1. internal/api/library_test.go's Mount call wasn't updated when
U3-T4 added the mailer.Sender param. 17 args, sig wants 18.
Adds a trailing nil for the mailer. Same shape of test-fixture
lag the project has hit before — flagged as a recurring pattern
for the DRY-pass slice.
2. web/src/routes/settings/settings.test.ts mocked $lib/api/me with
`getAPIToken: vi.fn()` (no return value). The new /settings API
Token card's $effect calls `getAPIToken().then(...)` which threw
"Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'then')" on every
ListenBrainz test. Default the mock to mockResolvedValue so any
test that doesn't override gets a valid resolution.
3. web/src/routes/admin/users/users.test.ts queried row buttons by
/^Delete$/ but T3 added per-user aria-labels ("Delete alice"),
so the row buttons' accessible name is no longer "Delete". The
modal's confirm button has no aria-label so its name IS "Delete"
exactly. Tests now click by per-user aria-label first, then by
/^Delete$/ for the modal confirm.
4. Same file: /Set password/i regex matched both the dialog's
submit button AND the row's "Reset password for ..." buttons
(because regex `Set` matches "ReSet" case-insensitively). Switched
to /^Set password$/ exact-match.
5. web/src/routes/reset-password/[token]/reset-password.test.ts had
/New password/i which matched both the "New password" and
"Confirm new password" labels. Switched to exact-match string
selectors.
6. web/src/routes/forgot-password/+page.svelte's onSubmit handler
had no catch — a rejected forgotPassword() bubbled as an
unhandled rejection in vitest. Added a silent catch since the
page intentionally shows the same success message regardless of
outcome (no-enumeration posture).
Completes the U3 frontend that T5a's crashed dispatch left half-done.
- /reset-password/[token] — public; new password + confirm. Calls
POST /api/auth/reset-password with the URL's token. invalid_token,
password_too_short, and mismatched-passwords surface as inline
errors. Success redirects to /login?reset=ok.
- /admin/integrations gains an SMTP card (alongside Lidarr) with
enabled toggle + all fields + Save and Send-test-email buttons.
Password input is a separate state from the loaded form, so empty
submission preserves the stored server-side value (matches the
backend's empty-password-preserves contract). Test button error
codes (no_email_on_file / not_configured / send_failed) surface
as actionable toasts.
Tests cover both new pages plus extensions to settings + integrations
test files for the cards landed in T5a.

Lands four of the U3 frontend surfaces. Splits T5 because the
dispatch covering everything in one shot crashed the runtime
mid-execution; this is the salvageable half.
- /settings gains three cards alongside Appearance: Profile
(display name + email), Password (current + new + confirm with
client-side mismatch check), API Token (display + copy +
regenerate-with-double-click-confirm). Server error codes map
to clear toasts.
- /forgot-password — public; takes an email and always shows the
success message regardless of whether the email is on file
(mirrors the server's no-enumeration posture).
- Login page gets a "Forgot password?" link below the existing
register link.
- API client functions for the four /me endpoints (changePassword,
updateProfile, getAPIToken, regenerateAPIToken), the SMTP admin
trio (getSMTPConfig, updateSMTPConfig, testSMTPConfig), and the
forgot/reset auth pair (forgotPassword, resetPassword).
Tests for these surfaces + /reset-password page + admin SMTP card
land in T5b (next follow-up).
Add browser tab titles to all 18 static page routes using the pageTitle()
helper from $lib/branding. Titles follow the Minstrel · Section format.
