Shipped stacks drop every healthcheck and the depends_on service_healthy wait, per rule 198 "Shipped compose files run on the orchestrator's defaults: no healthcheck, no restart policy". A pg_isready healthcheck turns slow storage into a killed database. The app needs neither: inkwell.dbwait waits up to 60s for Postgres at start, and the engine's pool_pre_ping retries per request. - docker-compose.yml: db and app healthchecks removed; depends_on is a plain start order. Comments cut to one or two lines per setting under rule 32 "Comments describe the product to a stranger": the family/rule references are gone, and the three-way port explanation points at docs/public-hosting.md, which already holds it. - docker-compose.dev.yml: db healthcheck and service_healthy removed; header shortened. - README: the copy-paste stack loses the same two blocks. restart: unless-stopped stays: plain Compose defaults to no restart, and Swarm ignores the key. #5918 "Backup file": an uncompressed tar of per-table JSON Lines (primary-key order, sorted keys) plus every attachment file, with fixed tar headers, a dated name, and an atomic write through a dot-named .part file. Unchanged rows are the same bytes every day, so restic off-site stores only the edits. No credential ever enters a backup. #5919 "Backup destinations": a folder, or an S3-compatible bucket through a stdlib SigV4 put/list client (checked against AWS's published signatures), with an upload limit. Test destination only lists, so an append-only key works. #5920 "Backup job": daily at a chosen hour, Back up now, a 1/2/4 h retry ladder, a one-hour deadline, an advisory lock, the last 30 runs, and an overdue verdict on Settings -> Backups. #5921 "Restore": python -m inkwell.restore FILE into an empty instance, an integration test that backs up and restores, and docs/backups.md with Fabled Archives as the worked example. Step 2 of milestone 481. The operator chose a full rename (Scribe note 5071), so this goes past the display strings into the identities: - src/thoughtsync → src/inkwell; every import, the Dockerfile and both compose commands, alembic env, pyproject - THOUGHTSYNC_* → INKWELL_* (database URL, secret key, log level, tag/port/bind) - container data dir /var/thoughtsync → /var/inkwell - image git.fabledsword.com/bvandeusen/inkwell; Postgres user/db default inkwell; CI's integration service follows - the files the image serves are inkwell.*. fetch-clients.sh still fetches the thoughtsync-named release assets, because the lanes that publish them are renamed in steps 3 and 4 - exports are written with app "inkwell" Two deliberate exceptions, both because data rides on them: - compose volumes are now named explicitly and overridable (INKWELL_DB_VOLUME, INKWELL_DATA_VOLUME), so a deployment installed as ThoughtSync points at the volumes and DB identity it already has. .env.example says exactly what to set - import still accepts app "thoughtsync", because exports written before the rename are backups. compose: say which of the three deployment shapes you're in
The operator asked why `THOUGHTSYNC_BIND` isn't just defaulted to the safe value. Fair question, and the answer exposed that my own advice was incomplete: I told them to set it to 127.0.0.1 without asking where their proxy runs, and for a proxy inside Docker that is the wrong fix. There are three shapes, not two: 1. **LAN, no proxy** — the default. Binds every interface so a phone and a desktop can reach the server. This is why the default is NOT the locked-down value: a server reachable only from the machine it runs on isn't hardened, it's broken, and that is the primary documented use of this app. 2. **Proxy in Docker** — delete the `ports:` block entirely. The proxy reaches the app over the compose network; publishing a host port is a second, unauthenticated way in that bypasses whatever the proxy does about TLS. Safer than 127.0.0.1, because there is no host port to reach even from the host. 3. **Proxy on the host** — `THOUGHTSYNC_BIND=127.0.0.1`. The compose file now spells out all three where the decision is made, and `docs/public-hosting.md` item 4 asks where your proxy runs before telling you what to do, plus how to check: `curl http://<lan-ip>:5000/api/health` from another machine should NOT answer once you're proxied. No default changed. Changing it would silently break every LAN install on the next `docker compose pull` — the phone would just stop syncing, with nothing saying why. |

Updater signing key, a rising dev version, and a production compose
Three things, all needed before the update loop can be tested. The public signing key is committed. Verified before trusting it: algorithm `Ed`, key ID 90E96FEA2F6D9B6A matching its own comment, 32-byte Ed25519 key. Dev builds now carry a version that RISES. Every build took its version from Cargo.toml, so each one was 0.1.0 — an installed 0.1.0 would read a manifest advertising 0.1.0, conclude it was current, and never update. The rolling channel would have looked broken while working exactly as written. Dev builds are now 0.1.<ci-run-number>, from one helper shared by both bundle jobs and the manifest writer, because three separate derivations of "what version is this" is three chances for the binary and the manifest to disagree. Plain semver, not a `-dev.N` prerelease: prerelease versions sort BELOW the release they qualify, so a tagged build would never update to a newer dev one, and Windows installer metadata wants a numeric X.Y.Z regardless. Bumping the minor still beats any dev build on the old line — 0.2.0 > 0.1.2932. The Windows job also gets the signing environment it was missing, so its NSIS installer is signed too. Without that the manifest would have had a Linux entry and nothing for the platform actually being tested. docker-compose.yml is now the production stack, per request: it pulls the published image instead of building, keeps Postgres OFF the host network, sets restart policies, health checks and log rotation, and refuses to start without a POSTGRES_PASSWORD rather than shipping a known one. Volume names are deliberately unchanged so an existing deployment upgrades in place instead of silently coming up against an empty database. Development keeps its own clearly-named file. ops: wait for the database on startup (no crash-loop on a slow DB)
New thoughtsync.dbwait polls the DB (SELECT 1) up to 60×1s before startup, logging each attempt, so a briefly slow/unready database no longer crash- loops the container. Wired as `python -m thoughtsync.dbwait &&` ahead of `alembic upgrade head` in the image CMD and the dev compose command; exits non-zero after the window so a restart policy can take over. Prod compose gains restart: unless-stopped as the complementary piece. config: fix media path at /var/thoughtsync (no env knob)
The media/data location is no longer configurable — DATA_DIR is a fixed constant (/var/thoughtsync) and THOUGHTSYNC_MEDIA_ROOT is removed, so a mutable path can't drift from where the volume is mounted. media_root() = DATA_DIR/media. Both compose files drop THOUGHTSYNC_DATA_DIR and mount the data volume at /var/thoughtsync (was the contradictory /data). conftest drops the stale MEDIA_ROOT monkeypatch (create_app never reads DATA_DIR). Net env surface: THOUGHTSYNC_DATABASE_URL (required) + THOUGHTSYNC_SECRET_KEY (optional break-glass). M0: Docker + Fabled-Git CI (typecheck + lint + test + build)
- 2-stage Dockerfile (node:22 build Vue -> python:3.12-slim runtime); CMD runs `alembic upgrade head` then hypercorn (rule 82). - .forgejo/workflows/ci.yml on ci-python:3.14: typecheck (vue-tsc) + lint (ruff check src/) + test (uv venv + pytest, DB-free) + gated buildx push with the rule-46 tag scheme (:dev/:latest/:<sha>). No local integration lane yet. - ci-requirements.md (rule 39); docker-compose for a local app+Postgres stack. - Real README with layout, dev instructions, and the milestone arc.
