rename(547): the server is grimoire — package, image, DB defaults, backups

Step 2 of the Scribe -> Grimoire rename. - src/scribe -> src/grimoire, and every import, patch target, module path, hypercorn entry point and `python -m grimoire.restore` with it; pyproject, uv.lock and the frontend package are named grimoire. - Image git.fabledsword.com/bvandeusen/fabledgrimoire; CI's Postgres service runs as grimoire / grimoire_test. - Compose files default the DB user, database and (prod) volume to grimoire, each overridable from .env, so an install created as Scribe keeps its data by setting POSTGRES_USER, POSTGRES_DB and PGDATA_VOLUME. - Backups are written as grimoire-<ts>.tar with format grimoire-backup-tar. Archives named scribe-* with the scribe-backup-tar manifest still restore and are still counted at the destination (folder and S3), with tests. - Exports, the MCP auth realm, the ASGI scope key and the persistent logger carry the new name. Kept on purpose: the secret-sealing key label stays "scribe.secrets.v1", because every stored secret was derived under it. Plugin identity (plugin name, hooks, env vars, .scribe marker, skills) is step 3. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

docs(6209): the remaining test files — lessons, reply moment and shape, retrieval specs and scopes, rule doors and judgments, services, snippets, search scope; five tests renamed to their property

Docstrings, section headers and assertion messages drop the record number, milestone or step that introduced the behaviour, and incident accounts are restated as the present-tense failure shape. A dead pointer to a design doc that is not in the repo is removed. Renamed to the property they check: test_the_old_shape_would_be_caught -> test_a_rank_then_scope_query_is_caught test_a_ledger_repeat_no_longer_produces_that_case_at_all -> test_a_ledger_repeat_is_counted_not_withheld test_the_header_no_longer_promises_once_per_session -> test_the_header_explains_the_seen_marker test_the_portal_case_no_longer_stamps_one_canon_onto_a_whole_file -> test_one_canon_is_not_stamped_onto_a_whole_file test_the_repos_own_prose_no_longer_defines_with -> test_the_repos_own_prose_does_not_define_with test_the_original_regression_create_note_with_content -> test_the_real_server_refuses_content_on_create_note Fixture and example ids stay: "note 5" in a supersession chain, "rule 156" in an illustrative question, `#2275` as the hex-versus-citation case, `#3244` as the example of a bare number, fixed dates in date-filter tests. fix(mcp): list tools return rows that say what a record is, not what it says (#4061)

list_tasks returned every row's to_dict(), body included: a project's todo list came to 93-165k characters, past what an MCP client accepts inline, so the list arrived as a file to page through (the #4045 failure, one call over). - notes.brief_row: id, title, type, project, tags, updated_at; for tasks, status, kind, priority, milestone id and title; description, parent and due date only when set. - milestones.titles_for: one query for the milestone titles a page of rows names. - Brief rows on list_tasks, list_notes, get_milestone's steps, get_system and list_system_records. get_task / get_note / get_snippet read a record in full, and each docstring says so. - tests/test_list_rows_brief.py pins the ceiling: 100 rows of ~5k-character step plans stay under 40k characters. feat(planning): start_planning hands back the active plan that already covers the work (#4079)

Step 4 of milestone 415 "An existing plan is found before a new one is made". A session that could not see an existing plan made a second one beside it. start_planning and create_milestone now ask first: an ACTIVE milestone in the project with the same title, or one that reads as the same plan (title, design and steps against milestone embeddings), is returned with its progress and a pointer to create_records(milestone_id=...). Nothing is created; force=true bypasses. - dedup.find_matching_plan / plan_gate / plan_match_response; access-checked before either arm (rule 78), fail-open like the other gates. - Done milestones never block; the semantic arm needs 200+ chars of candidate. - kb_plan_match_threshold (default 0.90) is a setting, in the Settings view, and pinned against the Python default by test_settings_defaults_agree. feat(rules)!: retire rulebook subscriptions and per-project suppressions (#4052)
CI & Build / Python lint (push) Successful in 3s
CI & Build / Plugin hooks (push) Successful in 13s
CI & Build / integration (push) Successful in 49s
CI & Build / TypeScript typecheck (push) Successful in 57s

A rule's home is its scope now: a rule in a rulebook topic is global, a rule on a project applies to that project, and retrieval reads that directly (#4074). A subscription had stopped changing anything a session received; a suppression muted rules from a subscription. Operator, 2026-09-15: "we have global and project scoped rules, we don't need the subscriptions now." What goes, whole (rule 22): - Migration 0101 drops project_rulebook_subscriptions, project_rule_suppressions and project_topic_suppressions, and strips subscribe_rulebooks (and 394's leftover exclude_always_on_rulebooks) from stored inception choices. - Service, MCP and REST: subscribe/unsubscribe and the four suppress/unsuppress operations. The Subscribers checklist, the subscribe chips, the skip buttons and the Suppressed section in the rules UI. - Inception asks two questions (design system, seed Systems). create_project and decide_project_inception lose subscribe_rulebooks. - Backup v15 stops exporting the three sections; older archives still restore, the keys simply unread. Trash no longer hard-deletes suppression rows. What changes meaning: - get_applicable_rules is a project's LISTING: its own rules, plus the global rules tagged to an area it works in. Untagged global rules apply everywhere and arrive by retrieval, so they are not listed. A co_surfaces partner on a different project is not dragged in. - list_rules(project_id) lists that project's own rules. - rules_payload drops subscribed_rulebooks and suppressed_*; the handshake's brief form is project_rules alone. - using-scribe's "Where a new rule goes" and inception sections, tool docstrings and docs say global vs project. Plugin 2026.09.15.1620. Milestone 414 step 2. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01821k5B3Ysecp9fNYs92Kuy |

fix(mcp): project reads list milestones without their plans, and cap done ones (#4045)
CI & Build / Python lint (push) Successful in 3s
CI & Build / Plugin hooks (push) Successful in 11s
CI & Build / TypeScript typecheck (push) Successful in 53s
CI & Build / integration (push) Successful in 1m0s

enter_project returned every milestone's full plan body. On a project with 39 milestones the handshake came to ~222k characters, 168k of them bodies (110k from done milestones). That is past what an MCP client accepts as a tool result, so the call meant to orient a session arrived as a file to page through. It grows with a project's history, so any long-lived project on any install gets there. - brief_milestone_summary (services/milestones.py) trims summary rows to the listing fields: id, title, description, status, order_index and progress. The plan is get_milestone's job. user_id, project_id and timestamps repeat what the caller knows. - enter_project and get_project share one block: every open milestone plus the 5 most recently updated done ones, in order. milestone_summary_omitted is attached only when older done ones were left out, and names list_milestones and get_milestone. - list_milestones lists every milestone, done included, without bodies. It is the call the omitted line points to, and it had the same size problem. - The REST project summary is unchanged; the web UI reads it. Tests: trimming, the done cap and its order, the omitted key present and absent, get_project and list_milestones, and a size ceiling on enter_project's milestone block for a 200-milestone history. The shape ledger showed the same test scaffolding defined over and over: _bind_user x12 (byte-identical), _dispose_engine x10 in three wordings, _no_supersession x3, _make_mock_session x7 in three subsets, a get-or-create User helper x2 (+3 inlined), and fifteen hand-rolled MagicMock note factories each re-explaining the same "an auto-MagicMock attribute is truthy" hazard (note 2109). Now: conftest.py carries _bind_user / _dispose_engine / _no_supersession as opt-in fixtures (pytestmark = usefixtures(...) per module, so unit tests pay nothing), and tests/helpers.py carries make_mock_session(), ensure_user() and fake_note(**attrs) — the hazard documented once, real values on every attribute the product reads. Call sites were rewritten by AST so titles with dashes and commas survived; the three SimpleNamespace _note stand-ins that only feed a single function stay local. feat(plans): milestone-as-plan-container; retire kind=plan (T3)
The milestone becomes the plan container: a new nullable milestones.body holds the design/intent (Goal/Approach/Verification) and individual steps live as first-class child tasks (milestone_id) instead of checkboxes crammed into one kind=plan task body. start_planning now creates a MILESTONE seeded with the body template (not a kind=plan task) and returns it with applicable rules; a new get_milestone MCP tool reads the plan back (body + steps + rules). kind=plan is hard-retired going forward — start_planning never creates one. The 'plan' task_kind enum value stays valid so the 11 historical plan-tasks remain readable in place; no body-shredding backfill (corpus review showed auto-splitting their checklists into tasks would be lossy: embedded code blocks, a non-binary [~] state, tables, ID-encoded hierarchy). - migration 0066: add milestones.body - model/service/route/MCP: body passthrough on create+update; get_milestone - server _INSTRUCTIONS: "plan" = milestone w/ body + child step-tasks - UI: ProjectView shows/edits a milestone's plan body; start_planning expands the new milestone and opens its plan editor - tests updated to the milestone contract + new body/get_milestone coverage Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> |

refactor: rename package fabledassistant -> scribe (code-only)
Renames src/fabledassistant -> src/scribe and all imports, plus the default DB name and DB user/password (fabled -> scribe) in config + compose. 952 refs / 154 files. Reverses the old 'internal name stays fabledassistant' convention. Code-only: live databases are still physically named 'fabledassistant'. Deployed environments must set POSTGRES_DB / POSTGRES_USER (or rename the DB) since the defaults now resolve to 'scribe'. Repo (FabledScribe), git host (fabledsword), MCP (fabled-git) and the image name (fabledscribe) are intentionally unchanged. ruff check src/ clean locally; CI (typecheck + pytest) is the gate. refactor(mcp): drop fable_ prefix from tool names; rebrand to Scribe
MCP clients see tools namespaced by the server's local name already
(mcp__<server>__<tool>), so the fable_ prefix on every tool name was
redundant and ate tokens in the model's tool list.
Tools renamed (34 total):
fable_search → search
fable_list_notes / get_note / create_note / update_note / delete_note → list_notes / ...
fable_list_tasks / get_task / create_task / update_task / add_task_log → list_tasks / ...
fable_list_projects / get_project / create_project / update_project → list_projects / ...
fable_list_milestones / create_milestone / update_milestone → list_milestones / ...
fable_list_events / create_event / get_event / update_event / delete_event → list_events / ...
fable_list_tags → list_tags
fable_get_recent → get_recent
fable_list_persons / create_person / update_person → list_persons / ...
fable_list_places / create_place / update_place → list_places / ...
fable_list_lists / create_list / update_list → list_lists / ...
Also rebranded in MCP scope:
FastMCP("fable", ...) → FastMCP("scribe", ...)
auth realm "fable-mcp" → "scribe-mcp"
ASGI scope key fable_user_id → scribe_user_id
ContextVar label fable_mcp_user_id → scribe_mcp_user_id
Tool docstrings "in Fable" / "Fable task" → "in Scribe" / "Scribe task"
Server _INSTRUCTIONS prose
Deliberately kept:
- The internal Python package name `fabledassistant` (per project naming
convention — internal stays).
- "Fabled Scribe" as the official product/brand name (page footer,
smtp_from_name default).
- References to the legacy `fable-mcp/` standalone package in docstrings
explaining what we ported from — accurate until that directory is
deleted in Phase 10.
Client impact: existing MCP registrations need
claude mcp remove <name> && claude mcp add ...
once with a freshly-copied snippet from Settings → MCP Access. Claude
Code then re-discovers tools on connect — old conversations that
referenced fable_* tool names will see "tool not found" on those calls
until updated.

feat(mcp): project + milestone CRUD tools
Seven tools matching existing fable-mcp contracts: - fable_list/get/create/update_project (no delete; archive via status) - fable_list/create/update_milestone (no get; no delete) LLM-era similarity-check / 'confirmed' guard for create_project is NOT replicated — Claude doesn't need it. The service's auto-summary regeneration side effect (services.projects.update_project) stays for now; gets removed in Phase 7 along with all other LLM code. Notable sentinels: - update_milestone: order_index=-1 means "leave unchanged" (0 is valid) - create_milestone: description="" becomes None at the service layer Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.7 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> |
